Litterae Mentis: A Journal of Literary Studies is the University of Kent’s peer-reviewed postgraduate journal of literary criticism.
Compiled and edited by postgraduate students in the School of English, Litterae Mentis provides a platform for MA and PhD students to publish papers about areas of literature that they have passion for. The journal aims to encourage unique research from new academic voices that echo the varied interdisciplinary interests of the academic community at the University of Kent.
Litterae Mentis was named as such in order to highlight the interconnectivity between mind and literature.
The journal is open access and available in both online and print versions.
Volume 9: Liminality — Call For Papers (Deadline Extended!)
There is still time to submit an abstract and have your work featured in a peer-reviewed postgraduate literary journal! The new deadline is APRIL 24th, 2023.
Litterae Mentis invites proposals for original literary and academic work from postgraduate students within the Division of Arts and Humanities at the University of Kent, which explores the theme of Liminality. This is a double blind-peer review.
Defined as a threshold in Latin, liminality characterises the state in which one crosses boundaries to experience emotional or physical transition, often through forced uncertainty. Travelling, migrating, coming-of-age, grieving and healing are all states of transition. The uncertainty of liminality in all of its forms, (physical, metaphorical and emotional) can be paralyzing, emotionally damaging, but ultimately transformative and freeing.
Call for submissions relating to the theme of liminality are welcome and include, but are not limited to:
• Experiencing urban liminal spaces
• Stories of migration and displacement
• Liminal spaces in architecture
• Place and placelessness
• Liminal spaces and the nostalgia of the past
• Transition
• Uncertainty
• Thresholds
Litterae Mentis seeks work in one or more of the following categories:
• 4,000-8,000 words for critical essays
• 3,000 words for short stories and scripts
• 1-2 pages for poetry.
An initial abstract is required for consideration for contribution to Litterae Mentis. Abstracts for critical essays, short stories and scripts should be 250-300 words and abstracts for poetry should be 100 words. The deadline for abstracts is April 24th, 2023, following which successful contributor will be contacted to submit their final piece.
